About Citation Coach

Citation Coach is a Bluebook (22d ed.) citation generator and checker covering 62 source types.

How it is built

Every abbreviation table, reporter and rule number the tool uses is derived from the rule text by a program, not written from memory, and regenerated whenever the source changes.

How it is tested

Alongside a hand-verified corpus, the checker is run against the Bluebook's own 1,287 printed examples on every change, as a ratchet: the number it accepts may only go up.

What it will not do

Where the Bluebook's own forms are genuinely ambiguous — a magazine and a newspaper are the same shape, and only the periodical's identity separates them — the tool says so and leaves the citation unclassified rather than giving it a confident wrong label.
